I am sad to say that I was unable to perform the Avena Sativa Rite last night, as I was billeted with a deranged non-believer who took offense at my preparing the sacerdotal porridge, snatched the holy spurtle, and began to whack me with it, shouting, in an excessively monophthongal dialect, "Ah'll spurtle you, Ah will!" and, as if that weren't enough, went on to comment on the phthongality of my own dismayed exclamations. Consonites take a vow of vocalic poverty: prospective monks living in the community are allowed to use only monophthongal vowels (and are billeted separately so as not to pollute the ears of their Brothers), while those who take solemn vows give up vowels entirely; when engaged in making the porridge for which they are famous, only a special sacerdotal sign language allows members of the Order to differentiate between a request for a spurtle to stir with and the sprout oil that lends the porridge its distinctive character. Being from Texas, it was hard for Johnny to manage the monophthongal syllables to the satisfaction of his Latin master, who would soundly rap him on his caput with an oatmeal-covered spurtle, the sleeves of his sacerdotal robes billowing during the follow through, and then send our hero off to the cold cell where he was billeted along with the other seminarians. Donning his bathrobe as if it gave him sacerdotal entitlement, my insomniac roommate (who was billeted with me in the kitchen of an overflowing hostel) kept me awake with his rude midnight porridge cooking, till I grabbed his spurtle and spurtled him hard, eliciting first a diphthongal Ouch!, then a monophthongal Ah!, and finally a promise to go to sleep. During my yoga retreat in the Himalayas, these were a few of my favorite things: the sustaining, monophthongal 'Om' that pervaded the valley, the simple and elegant sacerdotal hut where I was billeted, and the last bits of sweet conjee sticking to the spurtle of the temple kitchen. (by QuaQua)

The wind howled as the men dressed in sacerdotal robes pressed on in the storm seeking billet, willing to try any monophthongally named inn, like the Hot Pot, to shelter their new religious relic: a spurtle, still spattered with dry porridge from the last supper. (by petey13)
