"Be it Helen of Troy, Or Lewinsky of hoi polloi, Women, more than land and gold, instill in men a craze untold" - such catchy claims, the committee was to homologate, but alas, my dissertation, my dog ate. (by QuaQua)

Whereas Ms. Clay has demonstrated an ability to dissertate on the structure of the nuclear envelope beyond the limits of anyone else's understanding; and whereas our fine institution has instilled in her not only knowledge but also wisdom and gravitas; we, her thesis committee, do hereby homologate her and distinguish her from the hoi polloi with the title of "Doctor." Whenever he gets a few drinks in him, my friend Paolo inevitably begins to dissertate on the finer points of car racing; last night's lecture was on the crucial difference between the Pontiac GTO — mass-produced American garbage, a so-called sports car for the hoi polloi — and its namesake, the Ferrari GTO, a masterpiece with only 39 cars ever produced, each one instilled with the essence of Enzo Ferrari himself, where the "O" for "homologated" actually means something because you might otherwise think the car was custom-built. (by Eli)

Sophia dissertated on how using the expression "the hoi polloi" is really quite silly because it means "the the people" and the definite article should not be used; however, since her audience remained sleepy and confused, she abandoned her attempts to instill correct usage and decided instead to homologate the noxious idiom as acceptable in standard English speech. Oh, the travails of the automotive sociologist: never mind how much you rub elbows with the hoi polloi in the stands, how thoroughly your research subjects instill in you the esoterica of oil-changing, or how eloquently you dissertate on the class determinants of NASCAR spectatorship; neither you nor your sad, souped-up Subaru will ever be homologated into the world of the stock car elite. Hoping to instill in contestants a greater respect for the competition rules, the judge delayed the auto race and dissertated on why one vehicle, the Tempest, had not been homologated: it was custom made for racing and didn't meet the egalitarian requirement that participating models must be available for sale to the hoi polloi.
