The current century ushered in a form of hagiography positively verboten in earlier times-a kind of yellow-dog snooping about into the private practices of well established saints such as flagellation, gluttony, and the occasional debauch- which left the faithful faced with agonizing decisions as to where to most effectively aim their supplications. At Adolf's funeral, his son Hans delivered the eulogy and, clearly cowed by his mother's reminder that speaking ill of the dead was verboten, managed twenty minutes of virtual hagiography, making his cruel, tyrannical, yellow-dog bully of a father seem positively saintly, to the point that the congregation, the choir, the ushers, and even the minister began wondering uneasily whether they had mistaken the identity of the deceased and were attending a celebration of the life of some universally beloved champion of the poor.
