In his young and hirsute years, Dr. Thistle was the shining light of botanical taxonomists, cataloging new specimens from the Plant Kingdom with unrivaled alacrity, but as he started balding, he became something of a wastrel, squandering all his cortical activity on one Sisyphean project: cataloging escapees from the kingdom of his scalp. Persuading my domestic partner that the front hall is clean is a sisyphean labor since the floor is made of weathered brick and doesn't hold a shine, so it always looks worn and dusty because (and this shouldn't take a particularly sophisticated neo-cortex to figure out) weathered brick IS worn and dusty; that's part of its appeal to those of us who are not such simpletons that we equate "shiny" with "clean" and imagine that any house that doesn't actively sparkle must be the shameful province of slovenly wastrels who spend their money and energy with alacrity only on entertainment, never on maintenance. Hardly a wastrel, Joseph's alacrity in the face of the almost-Sisyphean challenge of rendering the cortical layer of bamboo fibers suitable for making into yarn perplexed his boyfriend, who much preferred the simple shearing of his pet alpacas. (by luigi)

The neurologist (quondam houseman lobotomist), finding that his subject's cortical activity patterns remained decidedly abnormal, took up with alacrity his dime a dozen trepanning drill (for he was no wastrel of department resources) and briskly reamed out a humongous cavity, from which surged a monstrous magma of cerebral matter that, with sisyphean application, he entirely failed to staunch. (by Et Seqq)

My soul was dying and my mind could find not the least amount of cortical stimulation under the weight of the numbingly Sisyphean repetition of ‘data entry’; and the demand for “cheerful alacrity”, by that wastrel of an office manager, only exacerbated my growing hostility and murderous mood.
