Mr. Rock and his lovely wife, Ms. Stone, had accreted a good deal of lichen on their smooth, napiform selves during the past two thousand years, which caused Ms. Stone to remark irritably to Mr. Rock that she had become absolutely unrecognizable, she was so weathered and green and crusty, to which he replied tenderly that he saw a shadow of her former self showing through the encrustation the way one sometimes glimpses, through the superimposed text, the original writing on a palimpsest, but his saying that only made her feel more than ever like an elderly valetudinarian and she knew it wouldn't be long before she was nothing but a pile of gravel.
