Ms. Withersnipe said to the toddler in her charge, "Now Johnny, if you must palaver as you draw, do avoid the sin of apocopation -- the crayon you've used for Phoebus is gamboge, not 'gambo' -- say it properly else I shall confiscate what you mispronounce and it will be your erstwhile crayon, clear?" Erstwhile, Ernie was the chatty, aging bachelor who palavered to almost any female bystander, but one day while working his shift at the chemical plant he was the victim of a spill of a gamboge-colored powder (which interestingly enough, was used to intercept the mating of certain insect pests by silencing their ability to make noise, which they use to locate a mate); and now, poor Ernie apocopates his every sentence. It was the usual painters' palaver when they got together on Wednesday evening for drinks at The Guard House when, for example, someone would state a preference for gamboge over yellow ochre because of the former's greater transparency and there would follow a rambling discussion in which raw sienna played a role and everyone's erstwhile teachers at the Academy thirty years ago would be reverently invoked, the liquor flowed in streams of quinacridone deep gold and burnt sienna and, while their speech increasingly eroded - lentition of consonants and apocopated vowels - the colors stayed sharp and true in their imaginations.
