Forgive me if my remarks today are crass and clumsy where the previous speaker's were dignified and spirituel, but please understand that while my cranial tissue may indeed be undergoing a gradual ossification as it inches closer to expiry, my more immediate problem is lack of sleep: the lady in the upstairs flat, a former ballet dancer, has recently reconceived herself as a gitana and taken to practicing the zapateado twenty-five by eight. Togged up as a gitana, Carolyn - ratcheting up a dance from dirge to dervish - descried two heads with earpieces turn nervously as Evan, debonair and spirituel, entered the posh Belarus casino (the team’s flip of twenty-five/eight surveillance on certain foreigners currently winning uncannily at baccarat), and held her glance for his precise deciphering that their target’s security detail definitely had not ossified since last month’s precipitous face off. Herbert was a physical chemist who had not simply gelled in his late teens but ossified entirely - devoid of any spirituel or romantic impulses - so when he heard the beautiful gitana sobbing in the hallway about "25/8", it never occurred to him that she might be employing the hyperbole common to those of gypsy ancestry to bemoan how overworked and exhausted she was, but instead he only wondered uneasily about the atomic numbers 25 and 8 (manganese dioxide, perhaps, as used in alkaline batteries?) and went back to the lab, where he forgot all about her by lunchtime.
