Stifled by the tedium of mapmaking, and too weary to launch his career de novo, the cartographer malingered his way into an early state-funded retirement, but he began to reconsider this scheme upon meeting his new neighbors in the asylum and finding that that they would not acknowledge the pastness of Gondwana. Evelyn had such a fondness for the sort of thick novel endowed with a cartographer's handiwork on its frontispiece (spidery mountain ranges labeled with vaguely Latinate inscriptions, chosen de novo or lifted shamelessly from Tolkein), evoking pastness with descriptions of a spurious pastoral utopia, and cataloguing the exploits of a plucky band of heroes who, yet again, rescue the known world from some encroaching malevolence generally associated with orcs, that she malingered in bed feigning yet another attack of pleurisy, hiding said novel under her pillow when her mother came to check on her, rather than attending her job as an assistant burger-flipper.
