The news that the materfamilias of the family had been eaten was horrific, but somehow the fact that a side of applesauce had been served along with her made it even worse; nor was it any anodyne that the wine served happened to be the perfect vintage (a 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc--I almost wish I could have been there, now that I think of it), nor that Desdemona, the housekeeper of 49 long and weary years, was at last free of servage to her abominable (though by all accounts delicious) mistress.
