In the early days, Mariana thought it adventurous or even charming to move to her husband's little coastal town on the Mediterranean Sea, but within a few months, the provincial and virilocal life with its all-knowing handwaving manciples holding court every day outside their storefronts in the main square became unbearable when, in some reprehensible cases, they spoke ill similarly of one and all. The college manciple, standing guard over the wine cellar door, remained utterly impassive under the onslaught of the Provost's slurred hectoring and hysterical handwaving, considering the whole sorry display particularly reprehensible in a married woman of a certain age, and wishing that she might acquire some sense of virilocal responsibilty that would persuade her to quit academia and serve as housekeeper to her distant father-in-law.
