The intense desert sun threatened to solarize our brains and cancerize our skins when a rising sirocco and sandstorm appeared on the horizon and started to close in on us, and we hurried back to the medina to take shelter in the main mosque, where we stood as ignorant of the meaning of the scriptures on the walls and as out of place as an unwashed peasant or ocker at the Royal Academy of Arts.
