Crotchberry was an extremely difficult, unpleasant, filthy (in a word, an "augean") man, given to woolgathering for days on end and then coming out with the most absurdly random and factitious remarks, like "Latvia is run by a sinister cabal of quail" or "I have a maitre'd in my trousers," as if he'd completely abnegated all pretense to sanity; but I liked him, because he had the second-largest collection of tungsten codpieces in Western Vermont.
