Despite the unresponsive, taciturn nature of her beloved, she continued to pine longingly for his affection, and the more distant he grew, the more insistently did she cleave to her fantasy that one day her love would be requited, and that together they would scale the sublime peaks of romance, their lives a blissful harmony adorned with adventures like the divine fioritures of an impossibly beautiful music.

She skipped around the garden that morning: Her voice pirouetting in octaves high, higher and low intermingled with fioriture, like crystalline dewdrops resting on the soft curves of blooming buds, and there she danced around with flushed checks and squinty eyes because it was morning and because her tiny eyes were otherwise defenseless against the burn of the developing midafternoon sun; later, as I sat in my armchair taciturn and somber, I thought to myself how I might pine for her fill the empty window frame and how I might cleave to the memory of that one June day.

I could tell Luigi was pining for the fioritures of the bel canto opera of his Florentine youth, because he had become taciturn (as only a longing for opera or a thought-provoking episode of Matlock could make him), and he cleaved to a portrait of Renata Tebaldi.

Princess Agnes wondered how she could do what her father expected her to do – to cleave to such a husband, taciturn to the extreme, when she pined for a lover with something to say, nay to sing -- not just a simple melody, but one with fioriture as well.
