King Richard the Lion Heart stepped out into the twilight sans his usual chainmail protective covering to take a look at the castle construction project and was mortally wounded by an arrow from an arbalest, and even more surprising, the gascon assassin who came forward was not a beefy warrior but a mere boy, leading to dubitation about the shooter’s identity and forcing the youth to conciliate the gathered crowd by explaining his motive – to avenge the killing of his father and brothers by the king’s guards, who took this news rather poorly, and led the youngster away to be executed, despite a pardon from the lips of the dying monarch.
