Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

Buster Bones, that varlet who terrorized the weaker folk of the village, proclaimed to his hapless victims that he believed in the apothegm “waste not, want not” when he began to bully the thewless Les Spyn and the guests invited to his father’s wake, where Buster applied his maxim by drinking the dead man’s fine whiskey to the last minim by snatching bottles and glasses from the mourners’ hands and drinking down the contents.

The old apothegm "A thewless varlet has not a minim of courage" has served me extraordinarily well o'er the years, despite the fact that I don't really know the meanings of any of the words.
