After he delivered his colloquy about good citizenship to the middle school boys who had gotten into the jewelry store through an open window, and having emptied their pockets of purloined possessions, the Maricopa County sheriff decided to cull the truly incorrigible gangbanger kids from the upstanding students in an attempt to determine what had actually been broken when they burglarized the establishment; he had heard them mutter the word “quebrado” (broken), but didn’t understand that it was just pochismo slang for getting arrested (“busted”).
