Weeks after my ill-fated visit to Erminione's, I heard that she lived on an increasingly misanthropic existence at her country chateau and that she had availed herself of the finest craftsmen in the county to build a series of gates around her huge property, each topped by a gilded gryphon, the whole of them concatenated by a long palisade built in the ne plus ultra style long ago favored by European royalty. Try as they might to reach their teenage son, Maude and Harry felt that their efforts were to no avail, since he appeared to have created the ne plus ultra barrier against the outside world with his attitude, as if he were surrounded by a palisade of metal stakes concatenated with a live electrical wire carrying enough juice to immediately incinerate any creature foolhardy enough to have navigated the moat stocked with hungry gators to approach his room.
