When high school dropout Wheaton Fields founded a georgic school to teach the latest techniques in farming and agriculture, his attorney wrote to ask if he intended his effort to be remunerated, "and if so, cui bono? or simply pro bono?" and Wheaton responded rudely that this discussion was an unwelcome phthisis of his time since "I am not personally acquainted with the Irish singer you mention, and even if I were, I see no reason whatsoever why he should profit in any way from my own endeavors."
