After the civil war, many rebel soldiers appealed to the new government for clemency, thinking that their activities during the conflict were de minimis and that they could return to their former lives and help rebuild the country, but the majority were taken into custody and accused of treason, cui bono, prompting those who survived to follow a new lodestar, a fellow prisoner who preached violence and vengeance for their perceived mistreatment, threatening a peaceful end to the country’s problems.
