It was provident that he had decided to concertina the large map which gave directions to the place he considered his ideal getaway spot – a never-never land of open space that others wanted to urbanize – so, before the developers attending the meeting could snatch it away, he was able to fold it quickly, slip it into his pocket, dart through the open window, down the fire escape, across the street to the subway station, and all that jazz, to make good his escape.

For all his talents, the aspiring musician lacked providence, imagining the future as a never-never land where all his dreams would be satisfied without preparation, as if a gleaming saxophone (and the skill to improvise on it) would materialize when wanted to play jazz, or a concertina (and a deep knowledge of its buttons and bellows) would come to him when he fancied performing a tango.
