Mycroft Sussman was a fabulist, but he was a sedulous fabulist: he wove fables about e'erything from what his pet chicken Roy had said that morning, to his own supposed career as a world-famous jazz clarinetist, to the paradigm shift occurring in the world at that moment (evidently people were suddenly realizing the Amish had been right about e'erything); but he spun these yarns with careful perseverance, with diligence of application and pursuit; and it was this quality which attracted Marcia's attention--that, and Mycroft's legendary ride through her kitchen on a Shetland pony, and the awkward leap he had made through her closed glass door and into the backyard pool.

An early clinical trial at sea, followed by the publication of a scientific treatise, were some of the sedulous efforts by ship’s surgeon James Lind to show that fresh citrus fruits could prevent scurvy, but jazzing up the diet of the common sailor with a few squeezes of lemon or lime was such a paradigm shift that many considered the Scottish doctor to be a fabulist, and so it took more than forty years before the practice was adopted by the British Navy.
