After we sculpted a kore, a Greek goddess, in a pottery class at the College of Fine Arts, we tried to concomitantly soften her skin and inspissate her body by placing her in a drying kiln and when we wheeled her out a day later, her grace and beauty at first gulled us that we had succeeded, but minutes later, one of us sneezed violently and she crumbled to the ground in a mound of debris.
