It would be many years before the effects of mercurials on the human brain were described, so she was puzzled by her husband’s mood swings and episodes of memory loss, and thought his business should be thriving due to her brother’s munificence -- although he had a rapacious nature rather than a beneficent one and expected profit from all of his partnerships -- but even though the two men were coetaneous their motivations were different, for her husband took great pride in his craft of hat making, while her brother focused on turning  every enterprise he touched into gold.

Knowing that Roger and I are coetaneous, I assumed that somewhere in our shared generational ethos there would be common ideas about proper behavior for a house guest, but this turned out to be a faulty assumption: during Roger's stay, his mercurial dining habits ranged from rapacious (stretching the bounds of my culinary munificence) to birdlike (leading to uneaten feasts and rotting leftovers).
