As Fall grew cold and white I consoled myself with thoughts of hiemal pleasures ahead -- yuletide feasts, the orphic delights of an impromptu concert by the fireplace, happy children playing in snow -- and yet I failed to anticipate the way our houseguests' strepitous newborn, shrieking at all hours in an increasingly claustrophobic cabin, would drive me to thoughts of infanticide.
