James Fitzroy (Roy) Abercrombie III was a protean individual – a man of many faces: a wealthy playboy who could splurge on cars, yachts, and women, a former sports star in both basketball and baseball, a humanitarian who visited many third world countries to bring health care to the impoverished -- but his hamartia was being portrayed by the fourth estate as someone who was usually drunk, naked in public, or involved in all sorts of silly pranks.

The main hamartia¬†in Erminione's early retirement at her country ch√Ęteau was its oppressive isolation and she decided to sell it and to splurge on a new property closer to town, which she whimsically christened 'The Fourth Estate', a protean choice with a double meaning, given that it was her fourth house and that she was the wealthy heiress to a large newspaper and publishing fortune.
