The geology conference was in Madrid this year, a perfect venue for Mike, whose airfare and accommodations had been covered by his professor's research grant: he skipped the second session to attend a zarzuela, relishing this escape from the allocutions on tectonics and the endless quibbling over lines on palinspastic maps, and finding himself quite in love as the heroine's silhouette first became visible through the curtain.

Professor Hardroque was known for his allocution and expected the members of the geological society to be quite interested in his talk, especially his palinspastic PowerPoint presentation, which would demonstrate the effects of extreme climate changes on the features of ancient volcanoes; however, he was surprised to have his lecture met with chuckles until he turned around and saw the results of a grad student prank -- Indonesian-style stick puppet silhouettes from a Spanish zarzuela dancing across the screen.
