As Mrs. Tuttle, a woman who believed she could transform the lowliest hobbledehoy into a gallant, approached the steamy and fecund widow Ash with the wan, young, pimply-faced Lawrence Lipper, a recent graduate of Miss Tuttle’s lyceum for Lotharios, on her arm, the watching wags leered, laughed and lauded Mrs. Tuttle’s acumen, knowing the introduction would vouchsafe the young man’s success.
