Due to time and neglect, the pinions had crusted with rust -- much like the sclerotic body parts of the aging miller, but the early spring rains had sparged the millpond lake, and although the gears were no longer pristine, they had been sufficiently cleansed by the foaming water to start grinding forward again with a long forgotten sound that awakened the whole village.
