It was different interacting with my grandmother now that she had reached a stage of senescence where she could no longer take a flyer with me and spontaneously travel to an unexplored location or help me with softball or soccer practice, but it was fascinating to hear her recount stories of learning to figure skate and the intricacies of Salchow, Lutz and Axel jumps, and living in the Berkeley co-ops which had been built to decant refugees from the San Francisco earthquake and fires of 1906.
