The bison’s time of teeming across the plains was fugacious after the arrival of the iron horse and white men with long guns, so the Fish and Wildlife service began using a quinary system to count the animals – any day during which five or more animals were seen by each of the wardens was considered to be an observation of a wide-ranging population, but the staff began to razz their supervisor about the new methodology when it became apparent that each of them was counting the same handful of animals over and over again.
