And in that moment, sliding and slipping and swimming headlong as though the dam has been riven and burst and he emerges from the deep darkness of his past into a searingly brilliant white light and screws up his eyes against the glare and splutters and snorts and sneezes before taking a breath and in the few brain cells closest to the very essence of himself and the fast erasing memories he has clung to on this epic voyage the last words he catches are “and this is the way the world begins, not with a bang but a whimper,” and the nurse quickly swaddles him and hands him over, saying “here's your fine boy, Mum,” and his roars and howls of hunger and rage and terror bounce off the four walls as his mother quickly puts him to her breast and he clamps his gums onto her nipple and draws deeply and is instantly contented by a sweetness like zwieback, gone the supercilious parsimony (what some might call “pride and poverty” and yet others dismiss as “fur coat an', nae knickers!”) he can now indulge his appetites to the full – a new life, a new identity and a new beginning - the new name will come later!
