It took a week, no, I tell a lie, it was ten days, before Gretl helped her son Bernie to reach the decision, the only decision, which she knew was the right one, unethical though it was and might possibly result in his being struck off by The Law Society of Scotland; ten days of weak winter sun and crepuscular evenings and nights during which the Full Moon was eventually reached; by that time he had consumed seven bottles of Laphraoigh but was at last back on the wagon, and the wistful look on his face, which was not for the abandoned Malt, but rather for the career which now hung in the balance, and because she knew that his decision was the morally correct one, even if unethical, gave Gretl some heartsease after the shock of his revelation, that his client, the man he had so articulately saved from possibly two charges of murder – though only one could stand in Law – and a further charge of attempted burglary, had been one of the men responsible for the deaths not only of millions of her fellow Jews, and Russians, but also millions more throughout Europe, together with Americans, Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders, West Indians, Indians, Chinese and other races and nationalities, civilians and soldiers on both sides in this War dreamt up by one evil deranged man and his cynical followers who saw that by clinging to his coat-tails they would also rise to positions of prominence and power and wealth and subsequently give every sadistic and twisted mind among their legion of adherents carte blanche to rob, rape, torture, murder anyone they didn't like or who stood in their wayand all justified by the so-called Nuremberg Laws which classified and codified racial separateness and that client was Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering alive and well here in Glasgow a few weeks after supposedly committing suicide in Nuremberg and the best witnesses against him were an 8-year-old boy called Snooker Tam O'Hare and her 26-year-old (but looking 62) son, Bernie Cohen!
