Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

1

A blackbird sang in the trees beyond the Loch, the Red Kite had moved East, the scene was unchanged, but when they went to take the bodies down to the marsh, they were gone and only the bloody javelins lying on the grass were grisly evidence that they had ever been there: "by Mars and Jove!" cried Marcus, "they were dead and now they live again! but where can they have gone?" and Sam gazed along the spine which ran due East from the hilltop scene of their sudden and swift battle, towards the three hills which rose green and mossy, with purple heather and splashes of yellow broom, and the signal station manned around the clock by signallers from Trimontium Camp, out of sight, down towards the great river, then he turned and clasped Marcus' shoulder: "they are no longer here, my friend, they are no longer a threat to yourself and Lady Christiane; I cannot be sure where or when they are, but alive or dead, I doubt they will ever return; but the message from Little Levy Balquhidder is clear: I cannot remain here, a kibitzer, while the World rolls on, I needs must return to my own time where there are other MacFarlanes and Doubledays to be oppugned before that route becomes impossible and though I can guess her answer, I must ask you, Christiane, do you choose to stay here or return with me?" and Christiane looked at Marcus, who took her hand in both of his, saying: "you know how I feel about you, my love, but only you can make that choice," and she squeezed his hands and moved into his arms and let them enfold her, "this is where I belong, Marcus, with you, wherever you go, I will be with you," and they kissed, slowly and deeply, oblivious of Sam, who, with a knife from Marcus' pack, quickly slit the threads either side of the tiny hole, until he had practically dismantled the thing, enough for him to put first one, then both arms, before dropping it over his head and around his shoulders, and as it moved down he slowly vanished, until only the entangled pieces if fabric lay around his feet, a finger and thumb appeared, and took hold of the pack and, as his feet disappeared, so the pack was pulled outside in and it too was gone; when Marcus and Christiane paused for breath, they saw that Sam had was no longer there, and the empty pack taken with him; "did you know him, before?" asked Marcus, and Christiane shook her head, "no, but if there is anyone who can destroy those men and their kind, it's Sam and his friends," which was when she spotted a silver hip flask and a cigarette case, containing twenty cigarettes and a built-in lighter, both were engraved: 'To Major Samuel S Smiles, for Bravery Beyond The Call of Duty', and after Christiane had translated that for Marcus, she said, "he must have dropped these, perhaps deliberately, for us to find," she unscrewed the cap of the flask and took a sip, "Laphroaig! once we've drunk the whisky and I've smoked the ciggies, I'll leave a message for the future, and I know just where to leave it!"
