Beneath her blusher, Olga had paled, as the import of the name of Magda's lover turned her surreptitious snapshot, taken purely for personal knowledge – the knowledge of the relationship apparently only hers to possess, apart from the principals, who were never going to tell anyone – into a potential political bombshell; there was a cunctative air of prevarication, no-one wanted to be the first to say the wrong thing, ask the wrong question, and so sentences were begun and left hanging: "what do you . . . . ?" asked Palestrina, "what if . . . . .?" asked Hubertus, "how could we . . . . ?" asked J Alfred, "well . . . . ." mused Vlad, but it was Gertie who cracked the nut open: "it's either a Get Out of Jail Free card, or a One-Way Ticket to the Tomb!" and then the words came rushing so fast they were all intermingled in a bombardment that made it difficult to know who had said which, but it began with Olga: "suicidal! . . . . . depends who . . . . . how it's used . . . . . blackmail! . . . . . leverage . . . . . put pressure on . . . . . how would he . . . . ? the shame . . . . . the blame . . . . . accusations . . . . . American Spies . . . . . Communists . . . . . bring down the Party . . . . . be the death of us . . . . . but what if?" and those last three words from Prufrock earned the pause he was looking for: "tell us about Prince Wilhelm?" he asked of Hubertus, who cleared his throat: "well, he is in direct line to the Crown – if ever the Monarchy were re-established in Germany, which isn't certain, despite his Grandfather's hopes; Hitler doesn't like the underlying sentiment of so many people for the Old Royalty, they see it as apart from Politics, even if it wasn't always quite neutral, but it doesn't have the associations with bully boys and street-fighters that the Red Brigades and the Blackshirts and Brownshirts have," and Gertie asked: "if he's your cousin, are you a possible Heir to the Throne?" but Hubertus laughed, "no, the Prussians look on people like me as a sub-species – yes we're related, but we're just milk, they are the cream: la crème de la crème!"

I took my time getting ready, applying my blusher in a cunctative tactic that would throw him off the scent, but nonetheless he stood there bombarding me with difficult questions, making me think - even more so on that day - that he was a subspecies of the human male who could not grasp the finer points of relationships.
