And so, as Ethel returned to the lounge and her host, Professor Sir Pontypine MacFarlane, she was mortified when he asked her: "what, my dear, is an Essex Gel?" and she realised that she must have been speaking her thoughts aloud while in the little toilet cubicle under the stairs: "oh, sir, it's a reputation that girls from Essex have acquired for drunkenness and easy debauchery, no modesty or decorum, something my dear old Grannie always warned me against," and MacFarlane poured coffee for her: "and you, my dear are a testimony to good character and a credit to your up-bringing, and you have inherited very fine looks, why, I daresay if it had not been for your Grannie's unfortunate acquaintanceship with The Doctor, she would have become a vedette of stage or screen, and what is becoming referred to as a National Treasure, and I have no doubt that you too, are a Treasure!" for he was feeling confident that his post-hypnotic suggestion had completely obliterated all memories from her mind of the previous night, and that gave him enough confidence to hint at her attractiveness to him, which was when she spotted the clavicytherium against the wall between the windows: "oh, gosh, sir, do you play? my Auntie Enid has one of those and taught me to play as a child, not very well, but I can pick out a tune," and he laughed at her artlessness as he crossed to the instrument, moving aside a little maquette: "oh, sir!" exclaimed Ethel, "is that The Cenotaph? my Grandpa, Solomon Grundy, was an apprentice architect with Sir Edwin Lutyens and worked on it!" and sitting, letting his fingers ripple across the keys, MacFarlane turned and smiled: "now there's a coincidence, my old Grampa, as we say in Scotland, met Eddie when he was working on Goddards in Abinger for Grampa's old school chum Freddie Mirrielees, and the three of them were members of a Gentlemen's Club called The Ring of Gold and met regularly until Freddie died in 1914 and Lutyens in 1944, in fact Grampa, his name was Sir Pentland MacFarlane, and Eddie shared a house before they married - not each other, I must stress - and they were each Best Man at the other's wedding, so it's quite likely that he met your Grandpa, and the name does ring a bell with me!"

I met you by the Cenotaph, and said,
This monument commemorates the dead,
So let this be a welcome celebration
Of our relationship obliteration.
I brought my clavicytherium as well
To play a suitably sombre death knell,
And by the monument I posted a vedette
To warn me if you come back and forget.
