Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

"Maw," pleaded wee Jeemy, "kin a gie Maister Doubleday – ah mean, Darcus – a peek at ma Library?" and Mistress Murray flushed, conscious of the regular state o disarray ahent her kitchen an parlour, "er, aye, aw richt, bit dinnae be lang, Sir Principle needs tae see the doctor," and the baronet waved a hand: "it's fine Darcus, ten minutes, no problem," so his freend let the boy tak him by the haund an lead him up twa flights o steep stairs tae whit wis clearly an attic converted intae the lady’s private domain; there wis hunners o buiks – he saw ane, open oan a desk, aboot the Anthropocene period, the early millennia o which he had guid first-haund knowledge – fer a wee instant he wis back there, alane in an adust vastness burning neath an immense sun whiles a volcano shot great gobbets o magma high intae the parched sky; here wis an illustrated volume makin muckle o the work o Capability Broon, a maun he cood ne'er tak tae – fer nae particular reason than he foond the manipulation o landscape for the entertainment o the wealthy jist tasteless godwottery; and on the wee boy's bed, a copy o Mrs Shelley's Frankenstein! "is this your bedtime reading?" he asked, sitting on the truckle, and Jeemy sat aside him: "aye, av red it twice afore, bit each time I get mair oot o it, am vexed for the puir moanster, he dusnae deserve whit they dae tae him! but nae metter hoo mony times ye read it it aye ends the same!" and he laughed, a high boyish giggle which seemed to cast aff his air o sophistication an reveal him for what he was: a six-year-old lad in a wee Borders village, wi an extraordinary precocity fer readin and unnerstaunin whit he read: "we expect to be around here for a week maybe," said Darcus, "after the Doctor looks at Principle's ankle and probably just straps it up, hopefully it's just sprained, we're staying with Lord Minto at the Castle, and Jeemy leaned towards him: "it's no really a cassle, jist a big hoose, but ther's a auld ruin up on the hilltap, Fatlips Castle it's cried, it used tae belang tae the Turnbulls an they'se a' got fat lips tae prove it, but dinnae tell ma maw I said thon, wull ye?" and after agreeing, Darcus made his way back down the stairs, promising to visit again an hae a better study o his young freend's library; which wis when wee Jeemy noticed that the haund that had held Darcus's seemed stained a dark broon: "help ma boab!" he said tae hissel, "ah never washed ma haunds efter plyin fitba' - ah better dae it noo or ah will get skelped if av made a mess in the hoose!"

She said she was an expert landscape worker;
She said that she would adonize the scene;
I ended up with adust desolation
Like the worst example of Anthropocene.
And when she'd done refurbishing the rest
T'was prissy stale godwottery at best.
