Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

When she had finished at the counter, Miriam spent a few minutes looking through a box of books an elderly man had brought in, hoping for anything vendible which she could take for the shop; she selected a few items, gave the man a receipt and told him that she would be in touch if any of them sold, then she took a seat at the table opposite Jakob, who took her hands in his and squeezed them: "we really ought to be retrenching at this time of year, but that was my old Professor of Latin and I couldn't turn him away, his wife is ill and he's finding it hard to manage, but I don't know if we'll sell a book about the fossil of a megatherium discovered in South America in 1788 – how can anyone write a whole book about one fossil? who would want to read it?" and Jakob laughed: "you would be surprised! it was really big in it's time, and maybe it's due to make a comeback!" and Miriam gave him a playful slap, but he caught her hand, pulled it close and kissed the palm: "seriously, chump!" she said, "when Suzette comes in in half an hour I'm going to be free – can we go for a meander through the flea-market? there was a great-looking velvet jacket I saw yesterday and the woman put it aside for me, she's also got a good suede one in your size, very good condition and she's only asking about 15 each, yes?" and, of course, Jakob couldn't resist the request: "it's a deal, we'll go, but I reserve the right not to buy the jacket if I don't like it, can you live with that?" and Miriam blushed: "you know I can live with everything about you, Jakob, whether you take the jacket or not, but I'm definately having the velvet one, it really looks smart on me!" and Jakob leaned forward for the kiss she gave him, across the table:

To make my products vendible
I needed to retrench;
The vegetables were rotting
And gave off an awful stench;
I meandered down the market lane
Trying to spot a sale
There was naught but a megatherium
And the jawbone of a whale.
