Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

But then Jeemy stopped and looked directly at Darcus: "kin Ah ask ye a question, Maister Doubleday?" and, feeling himself pinned by the boy's directness and the eyes which, without any guile, were trained fixedly on him, Darcus nodded, wondering what it could possibly be about; "ur ye an Albino? it's jist that efter we shook hauns at ma hoose, when ye wis leavin, Ah fund dye oan ma haun thet wisnae there afore! an Ah've seen drawins o Negroes in sum o Laird Minto's buiks an ye've obviously goat African features, an ther's a fitman at Laird Lothian's hoose cried Gideon whae pleys fer the Ancrum Cricket Club an ye'r mebbe na his double, but in general terms ye'r gey like him. cept his skin's broon an yours is blacker, like a couple of Jacky Howes whit wis amang the sheep shearers last year, they cam fi Australasia an cried theirsels Aboriginals but nane o they rubbed aff when Ah shook hauns wi them!" there was a rather stunned silence as the carriage rattled on, then Sir Parlane spoke: "you are an extremely perceptive boy, Master Murray, and quite lovecraftian in your intuition – oh, sorry, a bit after your time! you are correct in identifying that my friend. Darcus here, is indeed an Albino, a fact which causes him considerable distress, a distress which he seeks to minimise by the use of a colouring dye that more or less matches the other members of his family back home on the Gold Coast; does that satisfactorily satisfy your curiosity?" and the boy shifted, uncomfortably: "please accept my apologies, Mister Doubleday, I meant no rudeness or offence and am truly sorry if I have given either to you; while I am very learned in matters intellectual, I still have much to learn about the human range of emotion and the hurt that a casual and unconsidered word may cause," and he reached out his hand towards Darcus, who, after only the briefest hesitation, took it in his and they shook hands, much to the delight of MacFarlane, who had noted the lack of any dialect or indeed accent in the boy's brief speech: "you have no prejudice against people of colour, Jeemy?" and the boy grinned: "ach, naw, nane at aw, Ah've nae truck wi thon an if Ah wis in chairge Ah'd owerthrow they pernicious, un-Christian attitudes. efter aw, oor aw Jock Tamson's Bairns – it'd be a kinda borin wurld if abdy lookit like abdy else, homogeneity micht hae it's pint if ye wis mixin a poat o pent, but fowks is aw different, aw shades an colours fi Lamp Black tae Snaw White, Jings-o! oor a kind o Rainbow, when ye cum tae think o't! Ah div hope we kin be freens, Maister Doubleday?" and the other man smiled back: "so do I Jeemy, and you can start by calling me Darcus!"
