Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

Of course the Pound Bakery was 'out' of what Hyman Kaplan had wanted for his sandwich, so of course Hannah Manyanah had brought him the Scotch Pie and beans with a cup of coffee—not the Cinnamon Cappuccino he had hoped forwhich was actually rather good, but he couldn't bring himself to admit that to the Girl Friday, whohe always suspectedcould have the makings of a bunny boiler under her wraith-like makeup, luteous ginger hair and the oddest clothes she picked up from the Chest Heart and Stroke Boutique at the bottom of the High Streetwhich by some remarkable symbiosis actually worked incredibly wellso he ate and drank, then put on his tweed overcoat and the black leather trilby he had found in a cupboard when he had decided, along with the rest of the Editorial BoardSadie Moskowitz, Rose Mitnick and Tavish Dalwhinnieto base the paper here, and with a discreet nod to Hannah, presently sitting with her chair tilted back precariously and her feet up and resting on the edge of her desk, drinking Irn Bru and reading an old Broons Annual she must have found in the charity shop, he went down the twisting stairway and stepped out into the Square; now he could light his cigar and take his daily stroll, down the hill to the bottom of the High Street, turn right into Buccleuch Street, pass the old Post Office and catch a sight of the even older Abbey, turn right again and walk more slowly up the ever so slightly steeper Abbey Street and back into the Square, where, if there were still a few minutes smoking left in the cigar, he would sit on one of the benches and enjoy the afternoon sun on his face and contemplate the piece he was supposedly writing, on a prediction that a proposed Film Studio at Tweedbank might have the potential to turn into what Bollywood and Kannywoodjust two examples of once laughed-at and mocked creative projects in, respectively, Bombay and Kano, Nigeria, which flourished, blossomed and bloomed into huge commercial movie-making centreshad become, and he was calling Tweedywood, when he caught sight of a long-forgotten, yet still strangely familiar figure, sitting on one of the benches, reading a magazine, and he found himself in a quandarynot a place he was used to, or felt comfortable inand knew that he would have to decide, in a matter of nanoseconds, whether to turn ever so slightly to the right, as if he had not seen, and start his walk, which would take him behind the bench and away, or cross the street now, this instant, and walk straight towards the vision, this blast from the past, this reminder of what might have been but now never could, face-to-face with his own mortality!
