Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

"Well," said Kaplan, expansively, gesturing with both hands, "this is Melrose, in the Scottish Borders," and Miss Cavallero leaned back, then seemed to give herself a shake, "gosh, Scotland, I've never been here before, so what brought you?" she asked pointedly, as if hoping to push his attention away from her, but, "so how did you get here?" he asked, and she laughed, "the dangdest thing, Hyman, a Mystery Tour, you ever been on one?" but he pressed, "so is it a bus? what they used to call a Charabanc here, a coach?" and she nodded, and he noticed her fiddling with the clasp of her purse, "so where's it parked?" she gestured vaguely behind herself, and he asked, "and then you walked down here," and her nod was confirmation that she was lying, but he let it go, "where'd you get the magazine? New Garbageology, that your bag?" he reached but she put it behind herself, "it's just that there's nowhere this end of the street where you could buy it, so you must've brought it with you, yes?" and she snapped, "what's with all the questions, Hyman, back in class you mostly talked and wrote about yourself, the candidate most likely to. . . . ." and he smiled, self-deprecatingly, "that was a long time ago, but you can't be more than ten years older, how is that attainable?" but this time she wagged a finger at him, "never ask a woman for her secrets of eternal youth, you might not like what she tells you, but seriously, you don't look like you're on vacation, what brung you?" and he told her just that he, Sadie and Rose, both of whom she remembered well, had started up a newspaper here, with a local colleague, that he was the Editor, but not a lot more, and she didn't press him, so he figured she was slightly disorientated, "look," he said, "you know about the virus, yes? okay, you don't, well, there's a Pandemic here, heck, all over the world, it's like 1918, as if a great blanket of icy fog, a pogonip, has been wrapped around the planet, killing thousands of people, an invisible enemy, and everywhere, the governments are responding with all sorts of restrictions on people's movements, working from home if they can, no non-essential travelling—as on a Mystery Tour—keeping a safe distance, wearing these," he pulled out a mask and slipped the loops around his ears, "which I don't suppose for a moment you have?" she spoke warily, "you're kidding," then she laughed, but this time it sounded nervous, "nope," he said, offering her a new mask, still in it's wrapper, "so why don't we go for a coffeenot a lot of choice these days, I'm afraidand you can start by telling me the truth, and whether it's got anything to do with Worm-Holes, and note, no question marks in that sentence!"
