Attempts to resolve the Quandary:

So, in the back-room of the Ship Inn, where they were obliged to order a meal alongside their coffees - and a bottle of chiantithey were soon joinedafter Hyman had made a couple of calls - by Sadie Moskowitz and Rose Mitnick, and Tavish Dalwhinnie, who explained that while the new Tier Two Regulations meant that up to six people could meet, they could only come from two households and as his American friends had accepted his invitation to stay at his house last year, long before the Pandemic, although not related they nevertheless comprised one household and supposed that Miss Cavallero, technically homeless, could be added to their household 'bubble' as she was not living with anyone else, and anyway, there was still one spare bedroom, "do you live in a castle?" asked Carmen, and Tavish laughed self-deprecatingly, "actually it's a renovated Peel Tower in Darnick, not quite a castle per se, but sufficiently defensible for our purposes," and as the greetings between the former students of English had already been dispensed, Carmen said, "you want to know how I got here, and as I guess, like Hyman, you already know about Worm-Holes, it's clear there's no hokum concerning pishogue black magic and voodoo stuff and you know I'm no othering, though in truth I don't come from your own Time and Place," at which Sadie said, "you're pretty erudite, Carmen, but I sense your knowledge of Worm-Holes is empirical and that you have probably made use of them consciously, where we just stumbled in and out," and Tavish laughed, "in more ways than one, I can tell you," and Carmen asked, "did Sir Parlane MacFarlane and his sidekick Doubleday figure in your own adventures?" at which all four nodded and Hyman poured more wine and called to Rusty Irons at the bar for another bottle which his partnerbarmaid, waitress and long-term bidey-inDoughty Douglas brought over and she grinned at Carmen, "ah seen ye sittin oot in the Square earlier Miss, ony pal o these anesah cry thaim," indicating Hyman, Sadie and Rose, "the Three Musketeers, and him," nodding in Tavish's direction, "D'Artagnanhuv ye seen the movie?" at which Carmen winked and said, "and read the book," and Doughty chuckled, "ah gettit, ye've goat the tee-shirt tae? well, ye'r in guid company," and Carmen raised her glass, and smiled as the waitress returned to tell Rusty what had been said, then whispered to the others, "I've also been on a Zeppelinbut not the Hindenburgwas in Paris during the French Revolution, saw Charles I beheaded in London, was in St Petersburg during the Russian Revolution, and Boston when the Americans won their Independence," and realized that Tavish was beaming at her, rather like the cat that got the cream and she sensed that he wasn't just a journalist, and probably had links to at least one Secret Service, if not two or three.
