Mrs. Keck's sweet nature belied her gargoylish appearance and when she sat at the head of the table beaming upon her large, well-grown, hale family who were happily ingesting enormous quantities of spit-roasted venison basted with verjuice made from the Keck Vineyard's own grapes (and, perforce, had mouths too full to converse overmuch!), no one noticed her odd, ugly features, but only the cheerful light emanating from them.
