After defining the notion of Hobson's choice, the philosophy professor, an inveterate tippler, offered his class a translucent explanation of why there are, in fact, no Hobson's choices -- not in the hypothetical Ruritania that often figured into class discussions, and not in the good old U. S. of A. -- for whatever course of action one feels compelled to take in any circumstance, there is always a suitable alternative: drinking whiskey.
