Quadrivial Quandary: Logophiles, Rejoice! Each day we give you four unusual words. Can you fit them all in one illustrative sentence?
Quandary Resolution 1263
St. Elmo's fire, don't shoot the messenger, amerce, baksheesh
When the sailor rushed to warn the captain, “The mast's ablaze!”, the captain amerced him with a furious stare, upon which the sailor, now doubly fearful, whispered “Don't shoot the messenger,” but no plea, apology, or sycophantic verbal baksheesh would ever restore this coward, ignorant of St. Elmo's fire, to the captain's good graces.
