While the neat Korean children sat listening gravely to their teacher, like disciples at the feet of a starets, the visiting Occidental (newly arrived from Boston, USA) was being obstreperous, an irritating study in varieties of muscle contraction, the teacher's least favorite at the moment being the isometric contraction of the child's leg muscles whereby she kept her group's table elevated about five inches off the floor at one end by raising the cross brace on her ankles, so that everybody's worksheets slid off onto the floor.
