At the entrance to the seaside promenade, straining and peering up at the newly posted sign high above his head, Tip, a legless veteran of the Crimean War who got around on an old dolly propelled by his overdeveloped arms and hands, sounded the words out carefully, literatim, and when he still couldn't understand it ("NO SIRENIANS ALLOWED"?) briefly regretted not having completed a third trimester of schooling but then continued blithely on his way, cheerfully oblivious to the pointed looks of the passers-by.
