Stephan's information-seeking style had always been very much at odds with Elspeth's (she like a bright bird jauntily following a broken trail of breadcrumbs in the gravel atop the shifting ridge line of an esker), but he dutifully asked her questions about the paradoxical nature of koans generally and the lack of narrative coherence in hacker koans in particular, although his stolid, unimaginative outlook would never permit him to accept the utility of interrupting conventional understanding.
