As I skipped and pranced my way jauntily across a rubble-strewn moraine, musing en passant how I might succinctly describe to my loved ones a recently traversed long, narrow ridge of coarse gravel deposited by a stream flowing in (or under) a decaying ice sheet, whom should I unexpectedly encounter but a stolidly bourgeois fraternity of Gallic motorcycle maintenance aficionados who, questing oilily after Zen enlightenment, instantly petitioned me to join them in meditating upon the gnomic koan 'Qu'est-ce qu'un esker'?
