Errol unwound the muddy puttees from around his lower legs, stuffed them in his rucksack and, with his trousers thus unbloused, strode into the mess hall, eager to cause as much of a ruction as necessary to procure some buttered toast, since he had eaten nothing but corned beef from the Trench Ration for the past six weeks and, although he didn't deny the usefulness of tinned meat in the field, nevertheless his inner gourmand urgently needed to eschew strict utilitarianism in favor of a nice stack of toast embellished with jam.
