He deified her still, seeing not a fellow addict, but her imago, a picture he formed on the night they met – casino party, she's dressed as a pharaoh, slithery uraeus emanating from her crown – and although friends said “he lives with Medusa in a trailer park” the gambler believed he was traveling with a queen, both of them dressed incognito, just stopping “overnight” at a desert caravansary to mingle with commoners before returning to the sacred pyramid – the Luxor in Las Vegas – where they'd reclaim their riches.
